Differences Between An MLM and a Pyramid Scheme

By Christian I. Norris

Multilevel Marketing or MLM is a strategy that permits a marketer to profit from the personal sale of a product and also from those his recruits make. Many critiques of MLM assert that it is just like pyramiding. However the author Dominique Xadel's meaning of it is very apt in explaining how it operates and how it is different from pyramiding schemes. According to Xadel, MLM is a similar or synonymous to direct selling. He furthered that direct selling is the distribution method while MLM, the compensation plan. This type of compensation method is getting more popular. Even large businesses such as Avon, Electrolux, and Tupperware have adapted and assimilated MLM in their marketing strategies. The truth is the MLM sector has attained a lot of negative attention because some pyramiding scams guise themselves as legitimate MLM companies.

Do not be discouraged by the criticisms hurled by others. Should you like to get involved in MLM, it is best to get familiar with the many distinct differences between an authentic MLM plan from that of a pyramid scheme (PS). The main concentration of PS is on recruiting new members as the fees they pay are the central source of the scheme. MLM on the other hand focuses primarily on the sale of merchandises to the end users. Income is made through sales and a small percentage is attained from those closed by downlines. MLM products are usually used in day to day living such as household cleaning products, cosmetics, and beauty products. PS make unproven claims and hype. Products are also usually ridiculously expensive and not what consumers normally buy. Another factor to consider is if the company offers a post-sales/customer service assistance or not. The support system of a legitimate MLM company is well-established, again focusing on giving a customer a happy experience.

A genuine MLM company affords its distributors and affiliates valuable and effective sales and marketing trainings that correspond to the levels they are in. Members are fully educated on genuine sales process and strategies on how use efficient sales techniques. You also have to do some research whether or not the company is registered with local Chamber of Business. Pyramid schemes do not offer customer protection and, more often than not, do not rate well with the Better Business Bureau. MLM programs are sustainable not only because of the competitively priced products and services they offer but also due to the structure they have. It is only predictable that pyramiding schemes are going to collapse over time. As time progresses, there is an unrealistically enormous number of members that is required to support it.

It is completely logical why individuals head to MLM as many have made quite a fortune under this compensation plan. When you have the suitable tools, skills, expertise and dedicate time and effort to MLM, the chances of you generating huge profits are higher. To avoid being victimized by dishonest individuals, you must do your homework and learn how to discern a respectable MLM company from a scam.
