Creating a strategy can mean the difference between you working 60 to 80 hours a week all year long and then breaking even, or worse, losing money. However, there have been a lot of successful entrepreneurs who have a strategy work fewer hours, making lots of money, and their success is usually attributed to having a strategic plan and following it.
Any ideas what a strategic business management is? In simple terms, this is the process in which the goals and objectives for your business is defined and you create a plan of action to reach them and then you follow the plan.
So, how can you create a strategic plan for your business?
First, know what your vision for your company is. What would it look like if there are no barriers and nothing stopping you from taking your company as far as you could?
Next, what are your company's core operating values? You also need to know its guiding principles. In other words, figure out why you are in business and how do you do business.
Now create a 3 to 5 year plan. Your long-term plan is based on the broad objectives that will help you get from where you are now, to where you want to be.
A plan should be developed for this year. These are the specific objectives you plan to accomplish this year that will lead you closer to your long-term goals. Being "SMART" (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-oriented) is a must when you are setting your annual goals. Include a list of the barriers that are stopping you from getting where you want to go. Figure out what resources you've already got, and what resources you need to get you past those barriers. An action plan that will clearly tell you how you will achieve your goals is what you need to create. Involve key employees with this part of the planning process.
Create a set of milestones or benchmarks. This is important because you will be able to measure to measure your progress.
Try sharing your plan with the people who will be involved in the process such as your employees. The roadmap that will ensure that everyone ends up at the same destination is your annual strategy but everyone needs the same map in order to be effective.
Put the plan into action. Once you have the roadmap, then you need to start the journey.
Check your progress. You need to check your map every now and then to be sure that you're still on the same road and the same goes for any trip. When something isn't working, you need to make the necessary adjustments and figure it out quickly in order to be back on the track.
Next year, you also need to follow the same cycle. Dreaming, planning, acting, and checking is what this involves.
Creating a business strategy and following it will ensure that you enjoy the journey as much as getting to your final destination.
