Tips For Conducting A Federal Job Search

By Mark Cassell

When looking for a job, people may want to consider looking to the United States federal government. A federal job search is very similar to a job search in the private sector, but there are some differences of which job seekers should be aware.

Some may think that they would have to move to Washington, D. C. In order to work for the federal government. In actuality, federal positions can be found throughout the country. Atlanta, Houston, and New York are just a few examples of top cities for federal employment.

A federal job search can seem daunting. There are career coaches who specialize in this sector and can be quite beneficial. One tip they would provide is to try to network. The daughter of a friend who works in a particular department finds out that one of the secretaries are getting ready to transfer to another department. This knowledge can help a job seeker ensure that a resume is put together quickly and the application process is begun.

Another way in is through a government contractor. A person may find it easier to gain employment through a contractor. Some of these positions may turn into a federal job, allowing the current holder of the position to apply to remain. One way of finding these types of positions is researching through online, newspapers, etc. To find out what contractors are being granted government contracts. Most likely they will be hiring upon winning the contract.

Federal jobs can be found posted online. A person can locate the website to a department in which they are interested in order to find open positions. They may be able to apply directly on that site, or they will be redirected to a different site for the application process.

While the application process can be quite extensive, the public sector is usually even more involved. In the private sector, an applicant with a favorable resume may be brought into a behavioral interview. With the federal government, the application itself is a behavioral interview in writing. It will include areas to explain in detail KSA's (knowledge, skills, abilities) specifically for that position. How a person answers will determine their point score. Veterans are granted extra points for their service. The higher the score, the higher the chances are of being brought into a face-to-face interview. A word of warning, the applicant may want to print off the job description, with contact information, before submitting the form.

A federal job search, just as any job search, is very intensive. It requires a great deal of work and patience. However, it can lead to a very rewarding position.
