As a gamer, I seem to recognize characters that have long since fallen off of the proverbial totem pole. It's a shame because I have had many memories of these old mascots and I recalled their games being quite fun as well. One such character has seemingly fallen from grace for no reason whatsoever has got to be Sparkster. For those of you, who don't remember this particular character from the 16-bit era of video games, just know that online marketing needs to be used to help him come back.
Sonic the Hedgehog was the character who seemed to start the trend of animal characters with attitude during the early to mid-90's. While there have been many failed attempts by other companies to emulate the formula, Sparkster managed to stand head and toes above all the others. I believe a good portion of his was because of his design; the opossum wore a jetpack-laden suit of armor and wielded a sword, which only helped the "Rocket Night" persona. His likability was, to say the least, ingenious.
When you consider the likability of Sparkster and the quality of his games as well why is it that he seemed to drop in popularity over the course of time? It's been said that he didn't catch on with audiences, though I don't know how accurate this claim is. I think that, more than anything, Konami failed to stay committed to the character, even though the games were fun. Sparkster didn't deserve to be pushed away from the spotlight because of the actions of others.
It would be wrong to say that Sparkster does not have potential to succeed in this day and age. Effective online marketing could be used in order to help build up this character to great heights. The eyes of a younger crowd would remain focused on Sparkster and his many facets would be ones that would attract a crowd full of younger fans. I'm sure kids would love to control a character who could fly and swing his sword at the same time. A digital marketing firm along the lines of fishbat could form a strong brand for him.
While Sparkster's character has been forgotten by many gamers, it's not like the character hasn't tried to resurface. In fact, in 2010 a revival game known as "Rocket Knight" was released to digital platforms all over. It was a modest attempt to recapture the magic he once had but it was more like a small homage than a full-fledged reboot. Sparkster needs a true platform in order to become successful again because he's not a character that deserves to fail.
