Web Hosting Providers And How To Switch From One To Another

By Timmy Motson

When you have made the decision to take your website to another web hosting service you can make things a lot easier if you have a little planning to help you.

Minimise the Amount of Time that Your Website is Down

Make sure that you are up and running with the new hosting service before discontinuing the old service. If you have a loyal band of customers who would probably want to get in touch with you then you must be sure to have continuity.

It would hardly be surprising if your customers were getting upset when their emails were returned to them marked 'undeliverable' especially if they had spent money on your site.

Keep Offline Backups

Be sure to keep offline backups even if you are using special software designed to help you move from one provider to another. It is important that you have a safe back up in case anything were to go wrong during migration and you lost destination or source files.

Work Ahead

Your testing process should enable you to set up all the email accounts on your new host before you transfer. And after uploading all the backed up files from the root directory downwards you should be able to test your site by using a temporary URL.

Before making the final switch it is very important to make sure that everything is working as it should be and until it is you should hold off on the switch; when you are ready to move then simply log on to your domain name manager and point your domain name to the new servers.

Before you close down your old account it is vital that you have a plan in place which will allow you to test every area of your new account. And if there are scripts or transactions involved then this is even more important. It is advisable to be sure that everything has gone to plan before you close down your old account.
